About this event

Colorado Neuropsychological Society (CNS)

Annual Fall Conference:  Thursday, October 23rd, 2025 (Virtual Only)

The CNS Board is delighted to announce our program for the annual Fall Conference, featuring sports neuropsychologist and concussion expert, Dr. Alissa Wicklund, and adult neuropsychologist with expertise in military and complex concussion, Dr. Gregory S. Brown. The sessions will be both informative and thought-provoking. These are intermediate-level presentations appropriate for neuropsychologists, neuropsychology trainees, students, and other health-care professionals.

Session 1

Practical Management Strategies and the Role of Neuropsychology in Sports Related Concussion

Alissa Wicklund, Ph.D., ABPP-CN

Approximately 1.6-1.8 million concussions occur in sports annually, worldwide. “Practical Management Strategies and the Role of Neuropsychology in Sports Related Concussion” will review sport related concussion (SRC) from the pathophysiology and recognition of injury through practical treatment strategies. The role Neuropsychologists play in the assessment of cognition, education, management and treatment of SRC, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, will be explored. Evidence-based management strategies will be presented for both acute and chronic concussion care. Return to learn and sport progression guidelines will be presented as well as active exercise treatments. New thinking on the contributions of co-morbidities and iatrogenic effects on persisting post-concussion symptoms will be discussed. The Neuropsychologists role in public education and evidence-based treatments, as well as the proliferation of non-evidence based treatments will be reviewed. Finally, helpful resources and websites with evidence-based SRC information will be provided.

Objectives:

  1. Define sport related concussion and present the neuropsychologist with an understanding of pathophysiology and clinical symptom recognition.
  2. Differentiate between acute and chronic symptoms of SRC and how this information informs management strategies and outcomes. Early education on symptom trajectories and outcomes has been shown to be one of the most effective management strategies.
  3. Educate neuropsychologists on active management strategies, including in school, activities of daily living and in returning to sport.
  4. Discuss iatrogenesis and the important role neuropsychologists play in psychoeducation and proper evidence-based treatment to help combat adverse effects and complications that can arise from misinformation that is pervasive in concussion care.

Greg Brown

Session 2

Interdisciplinary Care for Management of Sports Related Concussion / Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Gregory S. Brown, Psy.D.

Sports related concussion management and treatment continues to rapidly evolve.  The heterogeneity of concussion symptoms and outcomes present clinical challenges in patient specific triage, treatment, and prognosis.  There are complex interactions between physiological and psychological factors that contribute to the variable symptom presentation post-injury.  Vestibular, oculomotor, cognitive, and emotional symptoms are commonly present, requiring multidisciplinary assessment and intervention.  This presentation will review the suspected neural underpinnings of concussion injuries, explore the evolving approach of an interdisciplinary model in the management of concussion injuries, and emphasize the role neuropsychology as part of the interdisciplinary team.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the current evidence for persistent cortical network dysfunction after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
  2. Recognize the changing landscape in concussion management.
  3. Describe interdisciplinary rehabilitation in the management of mTBI.
  4. Understand the role of neuropsychology in management of concussion.
